Taste the Smoothie Rainbow

Smoothies are one of my favourite things.  They are an incredible way to pack in some essential nutrients, protein, fruits and veggies without you even knowing about it.  Hate leafy greens?  Don’t know what to do with chia?  Need a way to hide some horrible tasting superfood powders? Want to try a dairy-free milk alternative?  Get a smoothie into your gullet!

Theses are the ultimate fast food and they are so delicious.  I have a smoothie almost every day.  Usually for breakfast.  Even in the winter I sit huddled up in a blanket sipping my chilled smoothies….they are just too good!

Here are a few of my faves.  All of these recipes are adaptable.  Adjust the add-ins and be creative!Smoothie Rainbow

Basic Smoothie:

equipment– hand blender/blender stick or standing blender (the more powerful the better)

1 cup liquid– almond milk, soy milk, rice milk, oat milk, coconut milk (not the super rich stuff), green tea, coffee, fruit juice (0r a blend of these things)

frozen banana– used in most of my smoothies because it makes them, thick and creamy and I don’t have to add any sweetener as the banana does the trick naturally.  Frozen is key to a delicious and thick texture.

frozen fruit (1/3-1/2 cup)– mango, cherries, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, kiwi, pineapple, grapes, melon

leafy greens (1-2 cups loosely packed)– spinach or kale  (I once tried frozen peas….ewww why!? please don’t do it, trust me)

powders (1 tsp-1tbsp)– protein powder (vanilla, chocolate etc.), mesquite powder, maca powder, raw cocoa powder, acai powder  (there are a lot of these out there)

extra add-ins (1tsp-1tbsp)– ground flax, chia seeds, peanut butter, honey, vanilla extract, agave, yogurt, maple syrup, medjool dates

So here comes the rainbow!   I learned that ROY G BIV is the rainbow,  in kindergarten I think! Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet.  Follow the measurements above to make, and most importantly taste, your rainbow!

RED: Red Raspberry Vanilla Smoothie

bonsoy (soymilk), frozen raspberries, vanilla protein powder, chia, flax, maple syrup

ORANGE: Mango Madness

bonsoy, frozen mango, banana, vanilla protein powder, chia

YELLOW: Tropical Passion Smoothie

orange juice, 2-3 fresh passion fruit pulp, banana, 2 tbsp. yogurt, chia

GREEN:  (from ohsheglows.com)Green Monster Smoothie

almond milk, banana, spinach, peanut or almond butter, chia, flax

BLUE/INDIGO/VIOLET: Blueberry Banana Bliss Smoothie

rice milk, banana, blueberries, chia, flax, vanilla extract

    Yum! I love the smoothie rainbow especially because there are no unicorns!
    I must keep more ingredients on hand to try out some new combos. The hand blender
    was my most valuable tool to prepare your baby food and now we are both using it to create healthy delights on both sides of the world! xo MOM

  2. jes wondrin if you ever add vanilla extract…or, is there something ‘naughty’ about vanilla that i am not aware of? xo
